RIGHT TO BUY SCHEME
   
 

 

As a public sector tenant you may be able to buy your home under the ‘Right to Buy’ scheme, at a price lower than the full market value.

This is because the length of time you have spent as a tenant entitles you to a discount.

The rules and regulations which would apply to you depend on the date you became a public sector tenant, for instance:

  • If you have taken up a tenancy before 18 January 2005, after a period of two years you may have the right to buy.
  • If you became a tenant on or after 18 January 2005, you have to be a tenant for at least five years before you can exercise the right to buy.

First introduced in the 1980’s, the Right to Buy scheme has helped over 1.5 million council tenants in England to purchase their own homes.

You may have the right to buy if you are a secure tenant of :

  • A district or borough council
  • A non-charitable housing association or registered social landlord
  • A Housing Action Trust
